The Arbitration Practice Group at ǼLEX held a series of events during the second edition of its Annual International Arbitration Month, from 29 March to 1 April 2022. The line-up of events included virtual sessions where leading arbitration practitioners provided insights into specific issues in international arbitration and an Arbitration Brunch for In-House Counsel only. The first webinar, “Seat vs. Venue – The Lagos and London Perspective” which held on 29 March 2022, at 3:00 pm was sponsored by the Lagos Court of Arbitration. The webinar was moderated by Oluwatosin Lewis, the Executive Secretary of the Lagos Court of Arbitration. The speakers were Marco De Sousa, a Senior Associate at Herbert Smith Freehills LLP, an international law firm with headquarters in London, and Oluwaseun Phillip-Idiok, a Senior Associate at ǼLEX. The speakers shared from their experience, the conflict between seat and venue in arbitration and pre and post-contract solutions. The second webinar held on 30 March 2022 at 11 am. The speakers shared insights on “The Role of a Damages Expert in The Valuation of Damages in International Commercial Arbitration”. The Managing Partner and Head of the Disputes Resolution Practice Group at ǼLEX, Adedapo Tunde-Olowu, SAN, with Ngozi Efobi, Partner at ǼLEX spoke at the session which was moderated by Osinachi Nwandem, a Senior Associate at ǼLEX. The third webinar at which the speakers addressed “Pre-Contractual Considerations in International Arbitration across different jurisdictions held on 31 March 2022 at 11:00 am. Chiann Bao of Arbitration Chambers, a leading set of independent arbitrators, with offices in Hong Kong, London, and New York; Perenami Momodu, a Partner at ǼLEX, and Ugonna Ogbuagu, a Senior Associate at ǼLEX, spoke at the session which was moderated by Oluwaseun Phillip-Idiok. The activities of the Arbitration month concluded with an In-House Counsel Only Brunch, which took place on 1 April, 2022 at GAIA House. Olatowun Candide-Johnson, Former General Counsel, TotalEnergies E&P Nigeria Limited gave valuable insights with other In-House Counsel on “Pitfalls to Avoid as In-House Counsel in Arbitration”. She magnanimously shared lessons from her over 30-year career as an in-house counsel during an interactive Question and Answer session hosted by Perenami Momodu, Partner at ǼLEX.
